Le Tours de France

Hi internet,

Last mouth I was at Saint Gilles to see by my self an event world wild spred every year.

I arrived on the morning, the little town is dead quiet. I take the morning to walk along the road of the race, seaching for a clean background for my pictures. I know the guys are fast. So I have one chance.

In my quest for a good spot I try to find shadows on the road to creat hard contrast. At the end of the morning I have find two possible spots, and one one with beautiful shadows. I knwo as the sun rises my shadows melt like ice cream. After food time I come back.

NO SHADOWS AT ALL. boring flat summer sun. That’s the game, and I don’t have a powerful strobe to overpower the sun.

So I chose to show mouvement and speed. Because if you go to France to see that thing you must know what you can exect to see.

What’s sport ?

According to Wikipedia :
“Sport (or sports) is all forms of usually competitive physical activity which,[1] through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing entertainment to participants, and in some cases, spectators.[2] Hundreds of sports exist, from those requiring only two participants, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals.

Sport is generally recognised as activities which are based in physical athleticism or physical dexterity, with the largest major competitions such as the Olympic Games admitting only sports meeting this definition,[3] and other organisations such as the Council of Europe using definitions precluding activities without a physical element from classification as sports.[2] However, a number of competitive, but non-physical, activities claim recognition as mind sports. The International Olympic Committee (through ARISF) recognises both chess and bridge as bona fide sports, and SportAccord, the international sports federation association, recognises five non-physical sports,[4][5] although limits the amount of mind games which can be admitted as sports.[1]

Sports are usually governed by a set of rules or customs, which serve to ensure fair competition, and allow consistent adjudication of the winner. Winning can be determined by physical events such as scoring goals or crossing a line first, or by the determination of judges who are scoring elements of the sporting performance, including objective or subjective measures such as technical performance or artistic impression.

In organised sport, records of performance are often kept, and for popular sports, this information may be widely announced or reported in sport news. In addition, sport is a major source of entertainment for non-participants, with spectator sports drawing large crowds to venues, and reaching wider audiences through sports broadcasting.”

But like Pirelli said “without control power is nothing”. I thing that the most important part of sport his spirit. It meditation in movement, a moment of peace in a very nosy world (I recommend to look at Zack Arias video Signal and Noise).

Physical activity is one way to cool our engine, kill stress. Freeze the action but let it continue.
I love blury photography because you can understand the way people move. It’s a different experience between movies and photographs. Both are great but I can help thinking that still photography have most impact in people mine.

That’s why I do what I do.

Sport start with real people in the street

For me nothing is more beautiful than a band of friend have fun playing with just a ball. Amateur sport is the essence of sport, it’s what inspired me in my photography. So I want to dedicate this first sport to all folks that include sport as a way of life instead of using it to make money.

Don’t missunderstand me, I love proffessional sport because it can break the limits and records. But when I want to feel a good sprit I like to shoot amateurs.

For example when I just came in here in Nîmes I walk the street like a straight dog (thank to Daido Moriyama) and discover some amazing people like Free runners “Traceur”.

After I make that picture, I came to them to speak about what they are doing. So they explain to me “le Parkour”, the art of motion. For more information: google,, Videos by Red Bull
